(May 9, 2007)--A 62-year-old gunman who killed himself in a Bryan bank had written letters citing his financial troubles.
Police initially described the death of Eddie Calvert Holdren of College Station as the result of a domestic dispute.
Holdren killed himself Monday after opening fire in First National Bank and ordering customers and employees to leave the building.
Nobody else was hurt.
Police thought he was searching for a woman with whom he had a relationship, but now authorities say the Vietnam veteran had mailed letters to Waco Congressman Chet Edwards and the media about his financial plight.
In one letter, obtained by the Bryan-College Station Eagle, Holdren referred to the Department of Veterans Affairs reducing his monthly check, bank overdraft charges and "sleepless nights and hopeless future, nothing but grinding poverty."
The letter also mentioned Holdren having to pay back child support.
The Eagle reports Holdren's letter ended by saying, "P.S. I tried not to shoot anyone."
