(May 10, 2007)--The convicted killer of a University of Texas-San Antonio student in 1986 is scheduled to die in the state death chamber in Huntsville Thursday evening.
Authorities say Jose Angel Moreno had already dug the grave for victim John Cruz before he was slain.
They say Moreno had plotted against Cruz for months because he believed the 18-year-old San Antonio convenience store clerk was from a wealthy family who could afford to pay a ransom.
The lethal injection would be the 14th this year in the nation's most active capital punishment state.
The US Supreme Court refused in January to review the 39-year-old inmate's case.
His execution is the first of two set for May and is among at least 14 scheduled in Texas in the coming months.
Next week, 41-year-old Charles Smith is to die for the slaying of a Pecos County sheriff's deputy.
