(May 10, 2007)--A high school teacher in Galveston faces marijuana possession charges after police say drug-sniffing dogs on campus led officers to his classroom desk.
Twenty-five-year-old Stakely McConnell is a Spanish teacher at Ball High School.
School police chief LeeRoy Amador says the drug dogs were doing a routine campus sweep Tuesday when they detected something in McConnell's desk.
No drugs were found inside the desk. Instead, the dogs smelled papers that had a marijuana odor -- an odor authorities say was transferred from McConnell's hands.
Amador said McConnell admitted to smoking pot over the weekend and that police later found a marijuana in his car.
School officials don't believe any students were involved in the alleged drug use.
McConnell is now on administrative leave.
He faces one misdemeanor count of marijuana possession.
