(May 10, 2007)—After meeting with top commanders Thursday at the Pentagon, President Bush said he will work with Congress on benchmarks to measure progress in Iraq.
But the president also pledged to veto a bill that the House is expected to pass later Thursday that provides only temporary war funding.
The president says that plan ``won't work.''
Mr. Bush pressured Iraqi leaders to move quickly on issues including provincial elections and legislations on the country’s oil wealth.
The White House has confirmed that Mr. Bush met this week with House Republican moderates who expressed deepening concerns about the war in Iraq.
But a Bush spokesman maintains that Republicans remain united as the House prepared to pass legislation that could cut off troop funding as early as July.
