The Chicago Tribune published a column by Mary Schmich which urged the graduating class of 1997, among other things, to "wear sunscreen" (the tongue-in-cheek essay ended up being wrongly attributed to author Kurt Vonnegut on the Internet).

President Bush told West Point graduates the United States would strike preemptively against suspected terrorists if necessary to deter attacks on Americans, saying "the war on terror will not be won on the defensive."

One year ago:
Six world powers, including the United States, agreed on a package of incentives to persuade Iran to halt its uranium enrichment program. The Iraqi government announced its own investigation into reports that US Marines had killed unarmed civilians in Haditha. A contrite US Army Corps of Engineers took responsibility for the flooding of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina. Seven family members were shot to death in an Indianapolis house. (Two suspects were later charged.)
