Man Dies in Apartment Shooting
WACO (December 3, 2009)—Matthew “Matt” Ash, 22, of Waco, who was shot in the neck in his apartment after a knock at the door from a friend died early Thursday at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, police said.
Neighbors said Ash was a student at Texas State Technical College, but later Thursday, family members said Ash was attending the ATI Career Training Center in Waco with plans to become an air-conditioning technician.
He was engaged to be married, grieving relatives said Thursday.
The shooting happened at around 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Sandstone apartments at 5101 Sanger Ave.
Officers at the scene Wednesday night said Ash was shot as he answered the door, but police said Thursday that Ash’s friend, Christopher Beals, 28, of Woodway, told investigators that two other men were in Ash’s apartment when he arrived.
He said one of the two men suddenly struck him in the face and that as he fell to the floor he heard a gunshot.
Then, he said, the two men ran out of the apartment.
Ash chased them, but collapsed outside, in the commons area of the complex, police said
Wednesday night, bloody towels and a pool of blood were visible where he fell.
Ash and Beals, who suffered a minor laceration, were taken to Hillcrest by ambulance.
Ash died at about 2 a.m. Thursday, police said.
Police said the attackers were both black and were both wearing black hooded sweatshirts, but no further description was available.
