(June 5, 2007)--A university official says the proposed border fence could leave a portion of the University of Texas at Brownsville and a Texas Southmost College campus on the Mexican side of the fence.

Antonio Zavaleta, vice president for external affairs for the schools, says it would be inappropriate for the schools' land to be on the Mexican side of the fence.

County, city and university leaders attended a town hall meeting Monday with the US Border Patrol to discuss the fence and the government's Secure Border Initiative.

The exact location of the fence hasn't been determined.

The university owns about 500 acres of land between the Brownsville and Matamoros Bridge and Veterans Bridge.

The Border Patrol could not be reached for comment.
