AMARILLO (December 9, 2009)--Officials say an icy road was the cause of the 90-foot plunge of a sport-utility vehicle into Palo Duro Canyon in the Texas Panhandle.

Tom Cruise, 64, died in the accident Tuesday morning.

He was a bus driver for the Claude ISD.

The accident happened sometime before 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, when Claude school
Superintendent Toby Tucker tried to contact Cruise by cell phone.

Tucker said rescuers searched for two hours before finding the SUV wreckage on the canyon floor.

Tucker says Cruise was driving to pick up students when the crash happened on Texas 207 just more than a mile south of Claude, which is 27 miles southeast of Amarillo.

No students were in the SUV when the crash happened.
