LUBBOCK (December 12, 2009)--Goldthwaite quarterback Tyler Horton threw for 211 yards, ran for 90 and scored four touchdowns to lead the Eagles to their first state championship in 15 years with a 29-25
win over Canadian in the Class 1A Division I championship Saturday
Goldthwaite (15-0) ended Canadians dominance over the last two
seasons after the Wildcats captured two consecutive titles in Class
2A (2007) and 1A (2008).
In a game defined more by a plethora of offense in the second
half, two defensive plays locked up the third state championship
for Goldthwaite head coach Gary Proffitt.
Linebacker Hunter Melton picked off Canadian quarterback Brandon
Robinson on a two-point conversion that would have tied the game
and ran it back for two points to give the Eagles their four-point
lead. Kiefer Wilson intercepted the final pass.
It's the Eagles fourth state title in school history and first since 1994.
