(June 12, 2007)--President Bush says he knows that immigration is an emotional issue, but he says "now is the time" to make changes.
He told reporters after a luncheon meeting with divided Republicans on Capitol Hill that the "status quo is unacceptable."
His personal effort to salvage a derailed immigration bill comes as key lawmakers try to work out a deal to revive the measure.
Mr. Bush says he knows that many do not agree with him.
He's trying to change enough minds among GOP senators to push through the immigration plan, one of his top domestic priorities.
The measure legalizes as many as 12 million immigrants, and also tightens border security.
Republican opposition caused the measure to stall last week.
