CAMERON (December 24, 2009)-A police officer was stunned by his own Taser during a struggle with a Cameron man during a routine traffic stop; the man was stunned twice before the struggle ensued.
Cameron Police officer T. J. Turner pulled over a 1993 Cadillac for a minor traffic violation before 5:00 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and West 8th Street in Cameron.
Turner had the driver exit the vehicle during the traffic stop then requested a canine unit for assistance.
Cameron police say that is when the driver of the Cadillac reached into and removed an item from the vehicle.
Turner grabbed the driver's arm but the driver fled on foot.
The police officer then fired his Taser at the driver and struck him in the back.
The driver managed to break free from the stun gun contacts and continued to run.
Police say he handed the item off to a nearby woman.
Turner again fired his Taser and struck the driver in the back a second time but the man again broke free, police say.
Police say Turner tackled the man and tried to apply handcuffs but the man refused to comply.
The officer delivered a third stun and then the two begin to struggle over the Taser; Turner was stunned during the struggle but finally managed to apprehend and subdue the man.
Investigators recovered crack cocaine from the Cadillac and the man was arrested for possession of a controlled substance.
Police identified the man as Michial Earl Simmons, 51, of Cameron.
Simmons was taken to the Milam County Jail where, in addition to the possession charge, he faces charges of resisting and evading arrest, attempting to take a weapon from a peace officer and tampering with evidence.
Police have identified and are requesting a search warrant for the woman who assisted Simmons prior to the struggle but declined to release her name pending execution of the warrant.
The Cameron Police Department is also seeking forfeiture of the 1993 Cadillac and also close to $600 cash recovered following Simmons' arrest.
