FRANKLIN (December 28, 2009)—Luminant has put the first of two new 800-megawatt coal-fired units online at its Oak Grove Power Plant near Franklin in Robertson County, the company said Monday.

"Achieving this critical step signals the end of construction and the beginning of Luminant's operation of another significant source of base-load generation for Texas," said Mike Williams, chief fossil officer.

Luminant says the two units will have lower emission rates than any other lignite plant in the state and at least 70 percent lower than the national coal plant average.

The second unit is scheduled for completion in the middle of next year.

The two units will be capable of generating enough power for nearly 850,000 average Texas homes, Luminant said Monday.

Environmental groups, including the Texas Clear Air Cities Coalition, of which Waco and McLennan County were both members, fought the plant, which officials fear could foul the sky and pump hundreds of pounds of mercury into the air each year.

For all of those who oppose electricity and power plants, just do your part and shut off the electricity to your house. Oh thats right, you want your electricity, you just want it to come from someone else's back yard.
