GATESVILLE (December 29, 2009)—Kenneth Elwood Mabes, 45, of Tuscola was in the Coryell County Jail Tuesday, charged with murder in the shooting death of David Eric Minney, 36, whom authorities identified as Mabes’ ex-wife’s boyfriend.

Mabes’ bond was set at $250,000.

He's a former Texas corrections officer, officials said.

Minney was shot to death with a large caliber handgun at around 9 p.m. Monday in front of a home in the 200 block of Putman Street in Evant.

Reports from witnesses indicate the shooting grew out of a domestic dispute between Mabes, his ex-wife and Minney, who was reportedly shot as many as five times.

Mabes and his ex-wife had recently divorced, authorities said, and their teenage children were at the home in Evant at the time of the shooting.

The ex-wife and Minney moved to Evant from Tuscola in West Texas about a month ago, authorities said.

The shooting happened after Mabes drove to Evant to visit his son and daughter, neighbors said.

Neighbors told deputies they saw the gunman standing over the victim’s body pistol in hand after the shots were fired.

Deputies arrested Mabes a short distance from the scene of the shooting.

The initial call brought officers from Coryell and Hamilton Counties, as well as Gatesville and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Minney was the father of two children who live in Louisiana with his ex wife.

Evant is about 23 miles west of Gatesville and 16 miles south of Hamilton on the Coryell-Hamilton-Mills county line.

But, I am proud of you for standing up for yourself and Eric!
