(December 29, 2009)—The rain, sleet and snow that fell on Central Texas through much of the day Tuesday was moving out Tuesday evening, although light rain or snow is possible during the night.
Temperatures overnight will generally remain above freezing, however, and no accumulations are expected.
Motorists may want to keep an eye out for slick spots on bridges and overpasses Wednesday morning, but any ice that does form should melt quickly as temperatures rise.
Patchy fog is also possible Wednesday morning, but by afternoon, the sun should break through and temperatures are expected to rise into the 50s.
There were reports of snow and sleet Tuesday in parts of Central Texas and elsewhere in the state, but along the Interstate 35 corridor, where temperatures remained above freezing during the day, conditions were mostly just wet.
Snow was falling across parts of the state Tuesday and more snow showers were possible overnight in West Texas, along with freezing fog.
Snow covered the grass Tuesday afternoon in Jack County and three bridges on Highway 148 were becoming slick, according to law enforcement reports.
In Stephens County, Breckenridge police reported 1 to 2 inches of snow on grassy areas, but said it was beginning to melt.
Sleet and snow fell Tuesday morning in Kerrville and officials kept an eye on Interstate 10, looking out for icing on bridges and overpasses.
Snow began falling Tuesday morning in Abilene where significant snowfall was expected.
In Lubbock, snow coated the ground, but no major travel problems were reported.
National Weather Service meteorologist Tim Brice said anywhere from a trace amount to about an inch of snow fell in the El Paso area in the early morning hours Tuesday.
He said forecasters expect another 1 to 3 inches of snow throughout the day.
The snow closed the Trans-Mountain Highway, a state road also known as Loop 375 that connects El Paso's far west side to the northeast and parts of Fort Bliss.
A winter weather advisory was in effect until 9 a.m. Wednesday for an area along and west of a line from Sulphur Springs to Kaufman to Hillsboro to Temple.
The advisory area includes Mills, Hamilton, Bosque, Hill, Lampasas, Coryell, Bell and McLennan Counties.
On Monday, Gov. Rick Perry directed state personnel and vehicles to be on standby as the winter storm threatens parts of the state.
Perry said the resources he activated Monday will help motorists and residents in the next few days.
DPS Disaster Districts in Abilene, Amarillo, Lubbock and Wichita Falls also are ready to help.
“Another severe winter storm is bearing down on Texas communities and will create dangerous driving conditions as travelers make their way to and from holiday celebrations,” Perry said.
“I urge Texans in the projected path of this storm to remain cautious, pay attention to changing weather conditions and heed warnings from your local officials,” he said.
