TEMPLE (December 29, 2009)—James Counts III, 15, the Waco eighth grader who suffered serious head injuries when a minivan struck him as he rode his bicycle on Dec. 4, was transferred Tuesday from the Intensive Care unit of Scott & White Hospital to the Texas NeuroRehab Center in Austin.

There he will learn such basic things as how to walk and feed himself, his parents said Tuesday.

His eyes are open, but he doesn’t recognize people and is not speaking, his parents said.

The Cesar Chavez Middle School student underwent lung surgery earlier this month.

The accident happened at about 5 p.m. on Dec. 4 as Counts road his bike across East Waco Drive at the intersection with Linn Street.

The driver of the minivan, who police said was an elderly man, was not injured.

The force of the collision shattered the frame of the bicycle.

Counts was taken first to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, and was later transferred to Scott & White.

Our family will keep him in our thoughts and prayers. I'll also add him to our prayer list on facebook. With Gods grace and mercy, all things are possible.

My prayers go out to this young man and his family. Hopefully this rehabilitation will go well for him. I have seen first hand what these wonderful people at rehab centers can do. They are like miracle workers. My Aunt was shot in the head and completely paralyzed. She couldn't speak or hold a fork. She even had to learn to swallow again. By the time she left the rehab facility she could do almost everything for herself. She could even walk holding on to something. Never give up. With prayer and faith and now rehabilitation, hopefully there will be great results. God bless this young man and his family.
