WACO (January 4, 2010)—The man whom two Waco police officers shot early Saturday morning after a high-speed chase through several residential neighborhoods was identified Monday as Aaron Jay Harvey, 47, of White Settlement.
The two officers involved in the shooting remained on administrative leave Monday while officials investigate the incident.
Their names have not been released, but police said Monday that one of the officers joined the department in July 2008 and the other in July 2009.
It’s standard procedure to place officers involved in shootings on administrative leave pending the completion of an investigation.
The sequence of events that led to the deadly gunfire started at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday when officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of North 62nd Street in response to a report that a man police now say was Harvey was breaking into vehicles in the area.
The caller who reported the break-ins told the 911 operator that the burglar drove off in a Chevrolet Blazer, heading west on Bosque Boulevard.
One of the officers who was responding to the original call spotted a Blazer that matched the description of the one in which the burglar fled, but when the officer tried to pull the SUV over, Harvey sped off, turning off of Bosque onto Cobbs Drive, police said.
A second officer joined the pursuit near the intersection of Cobbs and North Valley Mills Drive as the fleeing suspect continued to drive east on Cobbs at a high rate of speed, police said.
At the intersection of Cobbs and Wooded Acres, the fleeing driver attempted to turn left, but lost control of the SUV, which struck a traffic signal pole, police said.
As officers approached the wrecked SUV, they saw that Harvey had a gun, police said.
Both took cover as Harvey got out of the Blazer and pointed the pistol at the officers, who then opened fire police said, striking the man, who ran about 20 yards before falling face down because of his injuries.
After falling, Harvey still had the pistol in his hand and refused to comply with the officers’ orders to drop it, police said.
When he rolled over and again raised the pistol, the officers fired for a second time, police said, hitting the man, who dropped the pistol.
Harvey was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center where he later died, police said.
McLennan County Justice of the Peace Billy Martin ordered an autopsy.
