FORT WORTH (January 3, 2010)--About 170 people were arrested Saturday night in a raid on a cockfight northwest of Fort Worth.
Sheriff’s deputies seized 114 roosters Saturday in the raid near Poolville in north Parker County, 50 miles northwest of Fort Worth.
Sheriff Larry Fowler said Child Protective Services workers also took custody of 10 to 15 children ages 7 to 15.
Fowler said deputies seized drugs and cash and found dead and injured roosters.
He said the raid site had been under surveillance for two weeks before the raid.
The sheriff says those who were arrested will be charged with a gambling offense, and that organized crime charges may be considered against some.
John Goodwin of the Humane Society of the United States said cockfighting is a lucrative business.

It is indeed a very lucrative activity and it's also a lot of fun but it is illegal as all get out.
Hey George, I guess that you are against rodeo sports too huh???!!!!????
I would understand if the raid was over drugs, organize crime, or any HUMANE abuse of all sorts, but what I disagree on (making this country what it is thanks to our forfathers who died for this country- freedom of speech and BELIEFS) cockfighting is a tradition to many people, especially hispanics or latins. The roosters are not being abuse they well taken care of before the fight. Who would risk a lot on their own poorly, mal nutrient rooster? Nobody. Cockfighting is a traditional sport. Game roosters are bred for that porpose, just like cattle are bred for slaughter and business. Do you hear about Deputies raiding a slauther house? NO. If cockfighting is a custom, a belief, and a traditonal trait, then it should be respected. Like I mention earlier, as long there is not drugs, organize crime, or any type abuse involve regarding humans.
