Last week, a women's health and abortion clinic was issued a license by the Texas Department of Health, opening the doors for them to open up a location in Killeen. That news prompted hundreds of concerned citizens to show up to last week's council meeting demanding action.
Over the past week, the Killeen City Council weighed it's options and placed a resolution on Tuesday's council agenda to voice an official opposition to abortion.
The original resolution stated that the city council would, "consider a memorandum/resolution opposing abortion and recognizing that human life exists at the point of conception."
Tuesday nights council meeting drew another large crowd to hear the council's decision. However after further debate, the council decided that the original resolution may draw an expensive legal battle. Council members then adopted an ammended resolution that was unanimously approved.
The ammended resolution stated that the city council, "Opposed an abortion clinic from operating in Killeen." It further asked that the City manager take action in finding steps to limit or restrict an abortion clinic from operating in Killeen and propose a new resolution to the council.
Technically, the council has no official means in which it can limit a legal abortion clinic from opening it's doors. But council members say the move will give a statement to the clinic's operators that it's controversial abortion practice is not welcome.
