KILLEEN (February 5, 2010)--A Killeen woman was hit Thursday evening by a bullet fired from a gun her husband was cleaning.

The woman, whose name was not released, was struck in the neck as she stood in the kitchen of her apartment at 3201 Andover Drive.

Police say the husband was outside the apartment on the porch, cleaning the gun, when the weapon discharged.

The bullet went through a glass door, grazed the woman's neck and eventually lodged in a bathroom wall.

Killeen Fire Department paramedics transported the injured woman to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center around 6:50 p.m. Thursday.

No charges were filed in the shooting.

The incident remains under investigation, police said.

True, this is a sad situation. I'm sure it was a TRUE accident, BUT, you SHOULD ALWAYS check before cleaning. It was an accident that could have been avoided. I feel for the guy, and I hope he doesn't feel to guilty, but he should to some extent. Luckily it was his wife, and not some child playing around the area.

Just like my father said, over and over: "You can never, EVER check the chamber of a firearm too many times!!!" And: "You ALWAYS assume a firearm is loaded!" If this guy is a NRA member, he just lost his membership due to this display of stupidity.
