ROGERS (February 9, 2010)—Fire destroyed a mobile home Tuesday afternoon at 509 Artisan Road in Rogers and killed one of three dogs trapped inside.

But neighbor Patsy Trevino, who said she feared her neighbor was inside the burning mobile home, grabbed a homemade garden tool and started banging on the door.

She said she was able to get the door open and save two of the resident’s three dogs.

The right side of the mobile home was in flames when firefighters arrived.

A Rogers volunteer firefighter said there were initial concerns that the man who lived in the mobile home was trapped inside, but it was determined he left shortly before the fire started to visit his mother, who lives nearby.

The firefighter said the man said he had left a portable heater on, but officials said it’s too early to say whether that was the cause of the fire.

No one was hurt, but firefighters confirmed that one dog died in the fire.

The people that lived there is my son and daughter in law. I am thankful they were not home. I am Thankful for the neighbor helping the pets that she could. The dog that died in this fire was turned away from its mother when he was around 2 days old. My daughter in law rescued him, bottle feeding him every few hours around the clock. He went to work with us shopped with us. He was around 3 years old. He will be missed. My son blames himself for not being at home to get everyone out. They also lost other pets.

A different kind of help, but help nontheless: What does anyone expect in case of loss (hurricane, tornado, earthquake, flood, fire, etc.)? The disaster itself is news. What happens after the dust settles is the story. Insurance policyholders, and more importantly disaster survivors, need to be informed of access to basic rights and information. The internet reaches far more people than anyone would have ever imagined, though difficult to gather those willing to pause, to inspect, to further...to think on their own. And yet, much is available gratis! It just takes looking: www.disasterprepared.net/info.html
