(July 11, 2007)-- Lady Bird Johnson was a daughter of the woods of East Texas, but she’ll be laid to rest Sunday in her beloved Hill Country where the annual spring blanket of wildflowers will serve as a reminder of what may have been her most enduring legacy.

Mrs. Johnson died Wednesday at her home in Austin.

She was 94.

Her husband, former President Lyndon B. Johnson, died in 1973.

She is survived by her children: Lynda, and her husband Charles Robb, and Luci Baines Johnson, and her husband Ian Turpin, as well as seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

A private family Eucharist will be celebrated Friday at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin.

Starting Friday afternoon, the public is invited to pay its final respects as Mrs. Johnson lies in repose at the LBJ Library and Museum in Austin.

Visitation ends Saturday morning, and then a private funeral will be held at Riverbend Centre in Austin.

On Sunday, the public is invited to line the route of a ceremonial cortege that will pass through Austin and carry Mrs. Johnson to her burial place in Stonewall, at the Johnson family cemetery.

A private family service will be held at the graveside.

Mrs. Johnson, who urged Americans to plant a tree, a shrub or a bush, broke ground as an activist first lady, and she was the catalyst for passage of the Highway Beautification Bill in 1965.

She worked so hard on behalf of the measure, it became known as “Lady Bird’s Bill.”

It called for control of outdoor advertising and required the removal or shielding of certain junkyards.

For two decades starting in 1969, she supported the beautification of Texas highways by personally awarding highway districts that used native plants and scenery to the best advantage.

The effort she set in motion continues throughout Texas and across the country nearly four decades later.

On her 70th birthday, she and actress Helen Hayes founded the National Wildflower Research Center in Austin.

It was later renamed the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, and it’s there where her final journey home to the Hill Country begins on Friday.
