CHANDLER, Ariz. (February 22, 2010)--The National Hot Rod Association says it's "deeply saddened" by the death of a fan who was struck and killed by a tire that flew off of a dragster that crashed during a race in Arizona.

The woman was watching a first-round Top Fuel run at Firebird International Raceway when Antron Brown's Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster went out of control on the strip and its left rear wheel came off.

Alia Maisonet, a spokeswoman for the Gila River Indian Community, said the woman was airlifted to a hospital where she later died.

The NHRA's e-mailed statement said the organization "sends its thoughts and prayers to the woman's family and friends."

The car's driver was checked out and then released by the track’s medical staff, but later went to Chandler Regional Hospital for further observation.

Racing continued after the accident.
