Alejandro Avila was arrested in connection with the slaying of five-year-old Samantha Runnion of Stanton, California. Celebrated musicologist Alan Lomax died in Safety Harbor, Florida, at age 87.

One year ago:
President Bush issued his first presidential veto, rejecting a bill that could have multiplied federal money for embryonic stem cell research. Prosecutors reported that Chicago police beat, kicked, shocked or otherwise tortured scores of black suspects from the 1970s to the early 1990s to try to extract confessions from them. Actor Jack Warden died in New York at age 85.
