Five years ago today, Texas native Dan Rather anchored his last “CBS Evening News” broadcast, 24 years to the day that he replaced Walter Cronkite. He left the “Evening News” under a cloud. Rather’s credibility took a broadside in 2004 after the network broadcast a story on then President George W. Bush’s service in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War. A panel named by the network to review the story later concluded that Rather and his producers rushed a flawed story onto the air. Among the questionable elements in the story were four memos purportedly written by a superior officer about Bush’s performance. Questions about the authenticity of the documents arose almost immediately after the report was broadcast. After a firestorm of controversy erupted over the report, CBS News released a statement admitting the network was misled by the retired National Guard officer from whom CBS obtained disputed documents about the President’s service.
