KENEFICK (March 9, 2010)--Authorities say they've found a suspect in the shootings of two southeast Texas sheriff's deputies dead.

The shooting happened about 6 a.m. Tuesday in the Woodland Hills subdivision, about 40 miles northeast of Houston.

A Liberty County Sheriff’s Office spokesman said the suspected gunman was found outside a nearby house, dead of a single gunshot wound.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the wound was self-inflicted or from police gunfire.

The Liberty County Sheriff's Office identified the wounded deputies as R.E. Evans, 40, and Jeremy Marcantel, 32.

Evans was treated for his wounds at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston and then was later released.

Marcantel remained hospitalized there in stable condition with gunshot wounds to the head and upper body.

Both deputies were wearing protective vests, authorities said.

Liberty County Sheriff's Cpl. Hugh Bishop said the deputies were investigating reports of gunfire when they were shot.
