67-year-old Geraldine Williams still had a house-cleaning job on her schedule when she learned she was the winner of the $294 million Mega Millions lottery jackpot, but she end up canceling the appointment to meet with her financial advisors.
Williams is a retired janitor who has lived in Lowell, Mass. for 40 years. She has three children, eight grandchildren, and $117 million in after-tax Mega Millions winnings.
She says she plans to travel, give to charity and take golf lessons.
A neighbor describes her as a "bundle of energy" who picks up trash in the neighborhood and likes to help the elderly.
Williams say she is still in disbelief.
She said the hardest part was keeping her win secret for a few days and having to lie to people.
"It's horrible," she said. " I don't like lying, I don't like sneaking around."
She hopes the money won’t change her.
"I don't know. I don't know what it is to have money. So I hope I stay the same."
The jackpot is the second largest lottery windfall ever to go to a single person in North America.
The largest was a $314.9 Powerball jackpot won by Jack Whitaker of Scott Depot, West Va., on Christmas Day 2002.
