FORT HOOD (March 12, 2010)—Fort Hood’s 1st Cavalry Division honored its fallen heroes Friday, as about a thousand soldiers, friends and family members gathered for a memorial ceremony for the 69 soldiers and civilians whose names were added to the walls of the 1st Cavalry Division Operation Iraqi Freedom Memorial.

The names of each of the 69 were read aloud during the memorial Friday.

"Today though, we rightfully step back and take the time to focus directly on the 69 men and women lost in our most recent deployment,” said Maj. Gen. Daniel Bolger, the division’s commander.

A roadside bomb killed Megan Roberge’s brother Pfc. Jonathan Roberge in Iraq.

"Everyday is a challenge. To just wake up everyday and I have to realize that my brother's not here. It's very hard," she said.

"They will never be forgotten, any of the soldiers who have died in Iraq, or in any war,” she said.

Jenna Hunt lost her husband, Pfc. Jason Hunt in the November shooting rampage at Fort Hood’s Soldier Readiness Center.

For her and others, the memorial ensures that their loved ones are remembered.

"There's been a lot of times I’ve felt like we were being forgotten and when we do things like this, it makes me remember that we're not forgotten," Hunt said.

My son is my hero, as are all those who risked or gave their lives to safeguard our freedoms. Those who gave all should never be forgotten! We are, indeed, the Home of the Free BECAUSE of the Brave. Those who returned physically or mentally changed should not be forgotten either! Our veterans need to be remembered and treated fairly.

Thank you to the families of these heroes. My grandfather, his sister (my great-aunt), and my father were all in the military, and I am very proud of them for their service, just as I am sure each of you are proud of your loved ones. It's nice that this service was held and that these were honored.
