CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (March 15, 2010)--U.S. and Mexican authorities said Monday they’re looking into why a suspected drug gang ambushed two cars carrying families with ties to the U.S. consulate over the weekend in Ciudad Juarez, killing an American couple and a Mexican man.

Three young children survived the attack, but two were wounded.

Relatives identified the slain couple as Lesley A. Enriquez and Arthur H. Redelfs.

An infant in their vehicle escaped injury.

Redelfs was a detention officer at the El Paso County Jail.

The other victim, Jorge Alberto Salcido Ceniceros, was shot to death in his car.

His two children were wounded.

An FBI spokeswoman in Texas said there's no indication that the victims were targeted because of their work with the consulate.

Mexico's federal Attorney General's Office said it's taking over the case from local authorities.

The FBI said it is aiding Mexican investigators.

Officials said the SUVs on which the gang opened fire were carrying the families of U.S. consular employees from a children's party.

Several U.S. citizens have been killed in Mexico's drug war, most of them people with family ties to Mexico.

It is very rare for American government employees to be targeted.
