WACO (March 15, 2010)-- Baylor's women's basketball team, the No. 4 seed in the Memphis Regional, will face 13th-seeded Fresno State (27-6) on Saturday, March 20, in Haas Pavilion at Berkeley, Calif., the NCAA announced tonight. Joining Baylor and Fresno State in first-round action are fifth-seeded Georgetown (25-6) and Marist (26-7), a No. 12 seed.
The game will be televised on ESPN2 and will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Georgetown/Marist game which begins at 7:21 p.m., Central.
Baylor is 23-9 on the season and ranked No. 14 in the final AP Poll. The Lady Bears will be appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the seventh straight year and ninth time in the last 10 years while Fresno State will be making its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Bulldogs, winners of 19 of their last 20 games, earned an at-large bid after having their 19-game win streak snapped by Louisiana Tech, 68-66, in the finals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
Baylor is 15-7 all-time in NCAA Tournament play, all coming under head coach Kim Mulkey. Baylor has won its first-round game in each of the last seven NCAA trips.
First-round winners will face off in second round action on Monday, March 22, and the winner of that game will advance to Memphis, Tenn., to play either Austin Peay, Dayton, TCU or Tennessee on Saturday, March 27.
The 2010 Women’s Final Four will be played April 4 and 6 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
“I was excited about the draw. I don’t think anybody wants to be in a region with Connecticut. I think just the familiarity with Tennessee and having played Fresno State two or three years ago in the playoffs (helps.) We have played at Berkeley against Cal this season so we are familiar with the surroundings there,” said Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey. “I have not seen them (Fresno State) play this year but if they run the same system that they ran a few years ago when we played them they like to shoot the three-point shot, penetrate and dish. The only comparison that we have is that we played Louisiana Tech this year and they played them two or three times.”
Fans who desire to purchase tickets may call the Baylor ticket office (254/710-1000) starting at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, March 16. The Bear Foundation priority points system will be used to allocate tickets.
