MIDLAND (March 17, 2010)—A woman died and six other people were sickened Wednesday by what investigators suspect was carbon monoxide poisoning at the Rock House assisted living center for the developmentally disabled near Hogan Park in Midland.

Midland fire-rescue officials received the first report at 12:17 a.m. Wednesday after an employee reported for work and found the attending staff member sick in the living room.

During a search of the center, Assistant Fire Marshal David Hickman said, firefighters found Betty Contreras, 53, who had stopped breathing while asleep in her room.

She was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was sent to Fort Worth for an autopsy.

Hickman said the six other residents were treated at Midland Memorial Hospital and were later released.
