Fundraising dollars have dwindled since his father's death, but Waco Boxing Club's President says the non-profit, entirely volunteer-run group his father started has gotten a second wind.
"We needed that second wind because I was ready to shut it down. I wasn't getting any help. Sometimes I couldn't even get here to open the doors in the afteroon," Club President Gilbert Sanchez Jr said.
Sanchez's late father opened up the club about 35 years ago, and it was dad who knew how to bring in the big bucks. Gladhanding to get donations is admittedly more of a stretch for Gilbert Junior.
"I don't know how my dad did it. He was awesome. He's one in a million. I wear a size nine shoe, he wore size eleven and a half. So I can't fit in his shoes" Sanchez Jr said.
But when the Central Texas community got word of the boxing club's money woes, help came quickly. Dell Computers called Sanchez to offer a corporate donation. And more volunteer coaches came in to donate their time.
Volunteer coach Cisco Olivarez said he's proud to give back to the gym he too trained in as a child.
"The kids we got here are kids off the streets. A lot of them are. And I want to give back. I want them to have the same thing I had," Olivarez said.
And so long as the money and the free help keeps coming, Sanchez says they will be able to keep going... round after round.
