CLIFTON (April 1, 2010) -- Two men were killed Thursday evening when a train slammed into a white pick up truck towing a trailer in Clifton.
The Department of Public Safety was notified of the accident on County Road 3221 off FM 1991 at 4:43p.m.
The DPS says the driver of the truck appears to have gone around a railroad crossing sign before it was hit by the train.
Witnesses say the impact of the crash overturned the trailer.
The names of the two men were not released.
A BNSF employee said the train was headed to Temple.

We don't have a train passing through Hamilton, so I am not familiar with railroad protocol. My question is: are the arms supposed to go down before the train approaches or at the same time as the train passes? At this crossing the two actions are almost simultaneous. Also, there is a fencerow of trees to the drivers left that block the view of the track. A car might be able to dodge around the arms, but not a truck pulling a trailer as was the case here.

I did not know John but have known Teddy about 30 years. My prayers are with all of your families during this tragic and heartbreaking time. My prayers also to the railroad employees that experienced this too. Also, thanks to the fine men and women that not only show up to to a job many of us couldn't do, but suit up and take care of this work in such a dignified way. The incident is still under investigation and surely a thorough investigation will explain why the arms at the track did not receive any damage and answer all the questions that can be answered. May you all feel the comfort of God's love.
