Hotly Contested GOP Race To Be Decided Tuesday

WACO (April 13, 2010)-It’s runoff election Tuesday, the day a hotly contested GOP race will be decided.

After an additional month of campaigning by Waco businessman Rob Curnock and retired Bryan energy executive Bill Flores, District 17 voters now have the opportunity to choose who will face off against incumbent Rep. Chet Edwards in the November election.

The District 17 GOP vote was split among five contenders, none of which garnered a solid majority, sending the race into a runoff election between the top two candidates.

Flores received 21,453 votes in the Primary to Curnock's 18,624.

Curnock is banking on his experience in the district; the former journalist-turned-businessman came close to unseating Edwards in the 2008 election. Edwards won the election with less than 55 percent of the vote.

Flores, on the other hand, is depending on his vast bankroll and the backing of key supporters such as former U.S. Sen. Phil Gramm and former competitor Chuck Wilson.

Other local and state runoff elections include:

  • McLennan County Democratic Party Chairman election between Karen Petree and Kelvin L. Williams.
  • State Supreme Court Place 3 Republican runoff between Rick Green and Debra Lehrmann.
  • State Board of Education Dist. 10 Republican runoff between Marsha Farney and Brian Russell.

The polls are open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
