(August 10, 2007)--A retirement center in the Dallas area is coming to the rescue of a Grand Prairie woman whose electric wheelchair has been stolen.
Officials with Franklin Park Retirement Community say they have an extra wheelchair/scooter, donated by a resident who no longer uses it.
So that device is going to 63-year-old Michelle Phillips.
Phillips has diabetes that leaves her ankles and feet swollen.
Grand Prairie police are searching for the thief who broke into the woman's duplex while she was hospitalized with a foot problem.
Phillips returned home to discover that cash, jewelry, a new computer, her car and her wheelchair were gone.
Since then, Phillips has been using a motorized wheelchair she borrowed from a friend.
Media attention about the theft led to Franklin Park authorities deciding to donate their spare wheelchair/scooter.
