(August 13, 2007)--She made national headlines last year for being treated with tranquilizers for stress.

Tanzy, one of the Abilene Zoo's African elephants, died Monday morning at the age of 49.

Zoo officials are scheduled to release more details on her death later in the day.

They say an elephant's average lifespan is 33 years and that they believed Tanzy to have been the second oldest African elephant in North America.

In 2005, zookeepers noticed Tanzy was grumpy and subdued.

Sot they started mixing Xanax twice a day into her feed, along with some ibuprofen to ease her arthritis-related discomfort.

Zoo officials say the therapy was effective and seemed to improve Tanzy's quality of life.
