ODESSA (April 22, 2010)—Ray Edwards Brookins, the former assistant superintendent of the West Texas State School in Pyote, was found guilty Thursday of sexually abusing a teenage inmate more than five years ago.
Brookins was convicted of two counts each of having an improper sexual activity with a person in custody and having an improper relationship between an educator and student.
Brookins is one of two former administrators of the school accused of sexually abusing teenage inmates.
Former principal John Paul Hernandez is awaiting trial.
The sentencing phase of Brookins trial was expected to begin Thursday afternoon.
The sex abuse scandal upended the Texas Youth Commission and cost the agency’s two top officials their jobs.
