Texas House Panel Hears Health Care Overhaul Cost Estimates

AUSTIN (April 23, 2010)-The Texas House has begun sorting through the state-level effects of the federal health care overhaul.

Affected state agencies advised about new costs and changes they expect to face in presentations to a special committee in Austin on Thursday.

Health and Human Services Executive Commissioner Tom Suehs estimates that an expansion in Medicaid in the 10-year, $938 billion federal health care bill will cost Texas about $27 billion from 2014 to 2023.

An estimate from the Congressional Budget Office, however, has projected the costs to the state will be a fraction of that - $1.4 billion from 2014 to 2019.
