(September 4, 2007)—The US Centers for Disease Control will not allow Texas A&M University to resume research on toxic disease agents because of what the CDC says are poor safety practices, shoddy record keeping and a lack of proper training at A&M campus labs.
An 18-member CDC inspection team sent to the school in July documented the problems.
Days after the inspectors' visit, the school's vice president for research resigned.
The suspension will remain in effect until at least a dozen problems are addressed.
Robbin Weyant, director of the Division of Select Agents and Toxins for the U.S. Public Health Service, did acknowledge "efforts already undertaken by TAMU leadership to begin to remediate these deficiencies."
The CDC has been investigating practices and conditions at the labs after one worker became infected last year with Brucella and three others were exposed to Q fever.
