Rainfall Record Set Wednesday; Flood Warnings In Effect Through Thursday
Flood warnings remain in effect overnight for several parts of Central Texas after a day of heavy rainfall that set a record.

(September 5, 2007)—Flood warnings remain in effect overnight and into the day Thursday in several Central Texas counties after a day of heavy rainfall that set a record.

The National Weather Service says a record 2.93 inches of rain fell Wednesday in Waco, breaking the old record of 1.65 inches set in 1935.

There’s a slight chance of more rain overnight, mainly east of Interstate 35, but rain chances are only about 20 percent.

Rain chances Thursday are 20 percent or less, although there’s a slight chance of thunderstorms east of a line from Killeen to Sulphur Springs.

Meanwhile flood warnings are in effect for the North Bosque River in Valley Mills, the Leon River near Hamilton, the Leon River at Gatesville and Cowhouse Creek near Pidcoke in Coryell County as runoff from Wednesday’s showers continues to swell some area creeks and streams.

The warning for the North Bosque remains in effect until Thursday morning.

The warning for Cowhouse Creek remains in effect until Thursday afternoon.

The warning for the Leon River at Gatesville is in effect until Thursday afternoon.

The warning for the Leon River near Hamilton remains in effect until Thursday afternoon.

As much as eight inches of rain fell Wednesday morning in areas between Waco and Dallas-Fort Worth and the heaviest rain detected near the Jonesboro community 41 miles west of Waco.

There were reports of weather-related damage in southern Falls County, two miles northeast of Bell Falls along County Road 459 where a barn was destroyed and several trees were downed by the storm.

In Bosque County, Riverside Drive along the Bosque River in Clifton was closed Wednesday morning because of high water.

A school bus slid off a rain-slick road in Bosque County Wednesday morning. No one was hurt.

Late Wednesday morning in Bosque County, FM 3125 and FM 3310 remained closed.

There are also reports of road closures in Hill County.

The Coryell County sheriff's office reported flooding in several areas of the county as a result of the heavy thunderstorms.

The sheriff's dispatcher said at least two homes were flooded, as well as one mobile home.

Deputies are on the scene, along with members of the Turnersville Volunteer Fire Department.

Deputies report there are no injuries.

Farm to Market Road 182, was closed for a period of time as floodwaters from Middle Bosque creek inundated the roadway and bridge crossing.

The road was passable at 9 a.m., but the creek continued to swell.

Reports of as much as 4.5 inches of rainfall have been noted in the Turnersville area.

Creeks near Levita, in western Coryell County, are on the rise.

A dispatcher said deputies are closely watching water crossings on County Roads 106 and 174, but no flood damage has yet been reported.
