MART (June 21,2010)—After 16 years with the Mart Police Department--15 as chief--Billy Curry resigned Monday afternoon, less than a week after the Mart City Council voted to demote him to the rank of patrolman.

In his brief resignation, Curry wrote, "I, Billy Curry resign my position as police officer from the City of Mart under duress. I have enjoyed my time with the city.”

The resignation leaves the department with three officers.

Sgt. David Monthey has been named interim chief for the next 90 days.

The Mart City Council decided in executive session last Wednesday night to demote Curry and reduce his pay.

Curry said he wasn’t at the meeting, but said he thinks he was the target of a vendetta by one of the council members.
