Good morning, it’s Sunday, September 16, the 259th day of 2007. There are 106 days left in the year. It should be mostly sunny with highs in the 90s.

On this day in 1940, Rep. Samuel T. Rayburn of Texas was elected Speaker of the US House of Representatives, a post he held for 17 years, guiding New Deal and later war-funding legislation through the chamber, and becoming one of the most powerful and most beloved speakers in US history. Through the 1950s he worked with his protégé, Lyndon B. Johnson, who first as Senate Minority Leader and then as Democratic Majority Leader, wielded comparable power, giving Texas unparalleled influence in the US Capitol.
