WACO (July 14, 2010)—Michael James Reed will spend the next 20 years in prison after he admitted Tuesday he had sexually assaulted an 8-year-old girl.
Reed was sentenced in State District Judge Matt Johnson’s 54th District Court and by virtue of the plea deal he avoided a jury trial that had been set for next Monday.
The plea deal resulted in two concurrent 20-year sentences, one each on two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
The sentence means Reed will spend at least 10 years in prison before he may be considered for parole.
As part of the deal prosecutor Beth Toben said the state would dismiss an additional charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child, which carries a 25-year sentence.
The charges stemmed from events that occurred in December 2008 and March 2009, Toben said.
Toben said a jury trial could have presented a problem because the victim was unable to remember specific dates the assaults happened.
