On July 29, 1867—143 years ago today--Fort Griffin, which was named in honor of Col. Charles Griffin, who had recently died, was established on the right bank of the Clear Fork of the Brazos in what’s now Shackleford County. It was one of a line of defensive frontier forts built from 1867 to 1881 to protect settlers, travelers, buffalo hunters and cowboys during the Texas Indian wars, but by the early 1870s, it was already being recommended for abandonment and a departmental commander once pronounced it “unfit for human habitation.” The last remaining infantry company pulled out on May 31, 1881.
