Melissa Ringhardt (Jail photo)
ORANGE (October 26, 2013) Melissa Ringhardt, 19, of Vidor, was high on marijuana when a 5-year-old boy she was baby-sitting shot himself with her gun, a probable cause affidavit says.
Ringhardt is charged with abandoning or endangering a child in the death of John Read.
She remained in the Orange County Jail Saturday in lieu of $250,000 bond.
Ringhardt was arrested Tuesday, the day after the boy died.
She had been living with the Read family and the parents were gone at the time of the shooting.
A 6-month-old child was also at home, but wasn't hurt.
The affidavit says Ringhardt was "intoxicated throughout the day" and left a .40-caliber handgun on a coffee table while she went to take a nap.
She told authorities she was carrying the gun because she was afraid of being alone in the home.
She said that when she awoke, she found the 5-year-old boy lying in the living room with a gunshot wound, authorities said.
There was no phone in the home, so she babysitter carried the child to his grandparents' home, and authorities were called.
