KILLEEN (July 12, 2013)-A fire that broke out late Friday morning at the Killeen Housing Authority's Moss Rose apartments in Killeen heavily damaged the structure and displaced as many as 20 residents.

The building was a total loss, officials said Friday evening.

Killeen firefighters were sent at around 11:40 a.m. to the 1200 block of East Ave. E where the first units on the scene reported smoke and flames coming from a five-unit apartment building.

All of the residents who were home at the time of the fire escaped without injury.

Firefighters battled the blaze for almost two hours before they had it under control.

Police evacuated another apartment building next door as a precaution but firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading.

The building sustained heavy damage from fire, smoke and heat, firefighters at the scene said.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross was providing assistance to the displaced residents.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined.
