HUNTSVILLE (October 11, 2012)—After delays resulting from a series of last-minute appeals, Texas death row inmate Jonathan Green, 44, was executed late Wednesday night in Huntsville for the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl more than a decade ago.
Green was scheduled to receive a lethal injection just after 6 p.m. Wednesday and it appeared the Supreme Court cleared the way for his execution earlier in the day when it rejected an appeal from his attorneys just as the window for the lethal injection opened at 6 p.m.
But the execution was delayed Wednesday night by another appeal that finally was refused less than two hours before the midnight expiration of the death warrant neared.
Green was sentenced to die for abducting, raping and strangling Christina Neal, whose body was found at his home in June 2000.
Christina's family lived across a highway from Green in Dobbin, about 45 miles northwest of Houston.
Green's attorneys argued he suffered from hallucinations and an earlier competency hearing for him was unfair.
