Area Prison Inmate Killed In Van Crash Identified

MILAM COUNTY (June 3, 2014) Authorities Tuesday identified a female Gatesville prison inmate who died when the van in which she and three other inmates were being transported to a treatment facility as A Ellaree Mathews, 53.

She died at the scene of the accident Monday morning.

She was serving less than a year after a conviction in Angelina County.

Six other people were injured, Department of Public Safety Trooper D.L. Wilson said.

The accident happened just after 11 a.m. Monday at U.S. Highway 77 and Farm-to-Market Road 485, a report issued Tuesday morning by the Milam County Sheriff's Office said

Wilson said the van, operated by the Beaumont treatment facility Land Manor, Inc., was transporting inmates to Beaumont after their release from the Hackberry Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, in Gatesville, when it collided with a car driven by a Rockdale man.

Two of the injured, another inmate and a Land Manor employee, were treated at a Cameron hospital and later released.

The driver of the van, the driver of the other car and two more inmates were taken to Scott & White Hospital, in Temple, where they all remained Tuesday morning, two of them in critical condition, Wilson said.

The names of the injured victims haven’t been released.
