Judge Halts State Takeover Of Texas School District

AUSTIN (May 16, 2014) State District Judge Lora Livingston issued an order Friday that temporarily blocks the state takeover of the troubled Beaumont Independent School District.

Livingston did not provide a reason for granting the restraining order, which came at the request of Beaumont school board members.

Last month the state announced it was taking over the nearly 21,000-student Southeast Texas district, which has been under fire for its finances and handling of services to disabled students.

Two former school officials already have pleaded guilty to fraud charges.

State Education Commissioner Michael Williams said in a statement Friday that he still expects to replace the board and school superintendent.

A hearing is scheduled for next week for the Texas Education Agency to hear the school district's argument against a lowering of its accreditation.
