Auditors Review Whether Texas School District Cheated

Print

EL PASO (January 11, 2013)--State auditors are reviewing records to determine whether educators in the Canutillo Independent School District cheated on federal accountability standards.

This week auditors from the Texas Education Agency interviewed employees of the district, which is cooperating with the review.

They also gathered documents on compliance numbers.

A TEA spokeswoman says it's not known when a preliminary report will be finished.

An earlier internal audit alleged superintendent Damon Murphy, who's on paid leave and out of job on Feb. 1, raised questions about how some students were reclassified.

Murphy once was an associate superintendent in the El Paso Independent School District, where ex-superintendent Lorenzo Garcia pleaded guilty in a cheating scandal.

Garcia must serve more than three years in prison.
