LAKE BELTON (July 9, 2014) Thomas Buss, 48, of Killeen, evidently drowned Wednesday morning after falling from his boat in Lake Belton.

His body was recovered just before 1 p.m. after a more than three-hour search just off Leona Park on the east side of the lake just off Highway 36.

The body was in 8 to 12 feet of water about a quarter mile north of the bridge, authorities said.

An autopsy was ordered to confirm the cause of death.

A passerby who saw Buss fall from the boat flagged down a Bell County sheriff’s deputy at around 9:20 a.m. Wednesday.

The empty boat was found going in circles offshore.

First responders from several agencies were involved in the search.

Searchers found some items of clothing in the water before recovering the body, authorities said.

Fishing equipment and a life jacket were found in the boat, but Buss was not wearing a life jacket, authorities said.
